This Website...
This website was made for a year 9 school project, its purpose is to show independent research from a broad range of websites, books and other resources. The information is about Da Vinci and his inventions and how they have affected the world today. The website is made by Charlie and I, two 14 year old boys, and hope that the information found may be useful and interesting... enjoy.
Who was Leonardo da Vinci?
Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci, 15 April 1452 – 2 May 1519, was an Italian Polymath. He was a painter, a sculptor, an architect, a musician, a mathematician, a military-engineer, an inventor, an anatomist, a geologist, a cartographer, a botanist and a writer. He is known as the "Renaissance Man", because of his incredible curiosity, imagination and skill. Most know him as one of the greatest painters of all time, however he was much more than that. In fact some believe that he is the most diversely skilled and talented person to ever live. He invented various incredible machines, instrument and weapons, almost all of them years ahead of there time with technology yet to even be created. The technology was so advanced that most of his inventions (sketches now forever) were never built.
Conclusion
One of the main reasons for his inventions is the fact that he has "curiosita" meaning curiosity in Italian, it has driven him forward and was the seed to his success for he was always seeking the truth in all things which has made him so ahead of his time. Back then, in the 15th century, he was beyond the boundaries of thinking at that time. Everyday he would carry his notebook with him, and write down ideas, questions and all of his observations of the world around him. This inquisitiveness that he owned allowed him to become one of the best inventors and minds of all time.
Leonardo Da Vinci was an incredible man who contributed to our world enormously. He invented machines that are still used today and machines that are still seen as "cool" and "futuristic". He painted incredible portraits including "The Mona Lisa" and various other world known masterpieces. His understanding of the human body and the way we move and live was years ahead of his time and his sketches of human muscles and bones are detailed and complex.. however his inventions are not really thought about a lot.
The four inventions we have looked at are ones which interested us and ones which we thought were relevant to the world today. The armoured tank which was one of Da Vinci's most complex and detailed inventions gave us the idea of the tank, which altered the standings in World War 1 and 2; two of the events which have shaped and contributed the world as we know it.
The aerial screw basically gave us the helicopter and made the idea of human aviation seem reasonable and possible. It broadened the ideas of various inventors and without the imaginative thinking of Da Vinci, aviation would be far behind schedule compared to where we are now.
The ball bearing is still used today and on mass. It was probably one of Da Vinci's most ahead of it's time inventions and is completely necessary in life as we know it. It may seem simple and insignificant but the ball bearing is amazing. it is used in our cars, in industry with machinery and "tools", it is used in anything were friction might occur! Think about a mechanical object which moves and where friction is apparent, chances are there's a ball bearing in there somewhere!
The printing press started of the idea of mass printing. It allowed news to be printed, which before had to be hand written which made it expensive. It gave poorer people the chance to read and write, because before the printing press documents and books were all hand written making them far too expensive. News and information about events around the country were now known about from miles away and it broadened peoples boundaries, both educationally and literally. It also gave us ideas for the modern printer which use the same idea of an inked template being applied to paper.
Leonardo Da Vinci was an incredible person who had an understanding for the need of new "stuff" he took this to extremes and came up with ideas which were years and years ahead of their time which aided the world to advance and increase it's technology. His inventions and ideas are still in practice today which shows us that no matter how long ago it was, the genius he was, will always be remembered and his ideas will always be incredible.
